School Health Assessment is an essential part of the Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery Program, designed to equip students with practical skills and hands-on experience in community healthcare. Through this component, students assess learners’ health, evaluate school environments, and identify challenges affecting the well-being of both students and teachers. The program helps future healthcare professionals develop a holistic understanding of health promotion and disease prevention in schools.

In November 2020, nursing and midwifery students conducted a school health assessment at Mpata Primary School. During the exercise, the students identified health concerns such as malnutrition, skin infections, poor sanitation, and limited access to clean drinking water. Their findings highlighted the need for improved hygiene and healthcare support within the school community.

Moved by the challenges they observed, the students took the initiative to raise funds and purchase sanitary materials, hygiene kits, and essential medical supplies for the learners. Led by Emily Mlotha, the group donated the materials to the school and also provided health and hygiene education, demonstrating compassion, teamwork, and dedication to improving community health.
